New Changes this Year

A competition that continues to evolve

Each year we find new ways to make the competition better for all the competitors that it means so much to. The Grand National Custom Callmaking Competition is the largest competition of its kind in the WORLD with over 1400 "custom" made Turkey calls registered each year. As it continues to grow, we frequently have to evaluate what works and what doesn't. Here are some of the things that are changing this year.

  • We want to get kids more involved in callmaking, the wild turkey, and our hunting heritage. So when Clay Townsend asked if he could help kids learn to build turkey calls, the organization loved the idea and built a whole new program around the idea. This year we are offering kids workshops for free with several generous donations that we have been given from callmakers and other participants in the competition.
  • Weights have been adjusted to help with tiebreakers so that the computer system that records scores the judges have given can more effectively do its job and speed things up.
  • In an effort to help the judges out who at their own expense come to convention every year to judge our competition, last year we added a way for those judges to enter pieces into our competition in categories that are NOT judged. This year we are allowing those judges to enter any piece they want into those categories even if they did not make it. This should help pay for some of their expenses.
  • We added a new Hunting Set named the "Triple Crown Hunting Set" category which will feature 3 different types of calls. This will be considered a major award and first place winners will receive a $500 prize.
  • Callmakers can now get their money faster and more securely with ACH direct deposit into their back accounts

New Call Buttons ($1.99 Each)

We have replaced our call buttons for calls with two new designs. Each piece is 1 inch wide and 1/8 of an inch thick. Style "A" has a flat back which will allow the button to be glued to the call or base or bored out to inset in the call. Style "B" was designed to have the same image on both sides of the button and can be hung from any call. Style "B" has an included cord for hanging.
